Source of the Mundo River (Los Chorros)

Source of the Mundo River (Los Chorros)
8 kilometers from Riópar, in the Parque de los Calares del Mundo y de la Sima, it is located in a valley, where the headwaters are formed by a wide rocky semicircle, with high vertical walls where the Cueva de los Chorros is located, from which the Mundo River plunges in a drop of more than 80 meters, forming one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Spain.

From a speleological perspective, it is one of the most remarkable caves in the country. The mouth of the cave is 15 meters wide by 25 meters high. It still remains a challenge, as only about 30 kilometers of highly complex galleries have been explored and mapped, where underground rivers flow, forming stalagmites and stalactites, waterfalls, and even lakes.

During the rainy and snowy season, a phenomenon known as "El Reventón" sometimes occurs, causing a significant increase in the river's flow and creating a spectacle for adults and children alike.

Old Riopar

Along with the towns of Villapalacios, Bienservida, Villaverde de Guadalimar, and Cotillas, it formed part of the Lordship of the Cinco Villas, a historic sub-region within the larger Alfoz de Alcaraz. The Alfoz belonged to the Marquisate of Villena, which was eventually annexed by the Catholic Monarchs to the Crown of Castile, within the Kingdom of Toledo.

The municipality includes a historical and cultural centre, the hamlet of Riópar Viejo, the former Rivus Oppae (or fox river), a medieval town currently restored and located about three kilometres west of modern Riópar.

Church of the Holy Spirit

You can visit the Church of the Holy Spirit, a 15th-century building declared a National Historic-Artistic Monument. It consists of a rectangular floor plan with five bays separated by arches. The roof is a wooden truss decorated with Mudejar-style paintings. Its interior is distinguished by its harmonious and simple style, featuring a wooden choir stall supported by a column and a beautiful baptismal chapel. The exterior features a solid bell tower.

On the mountainside, we can see the remains of the castle, of Islamic origin and rebuilt in Christian times, but only a few remains of the defensive wall and a few towers remain.

You can also visit the Esparto Museum, where you can see a varied exhibition of pieces made from esparto and other materials, as well as tools and implements formerly used in rural life.
